A new analysis shows that the city of Jinan, the capital of east China's Shandong Province, had the worst traffic congestion in China through the third quarter of this year.

According to the report compiled by Chinese navigation service Gaode Map, as well as several other institutes, Jinan, which was the second most congested city in the second quarter, has overtaken Beijing to top the list.

Beijing has now slipped to the 3rd on the list.

Heilongjiang's capital Harbin has taken over the second spot.

The report also indicates that 37 of the 100 major cities in China have seen their congestion reduce compared with the same period last year.

Among them, the city of Shijiazhuang, capital of north China's Hebei Province, has witnessed the largest improvement in its traffic flows, with its congestion index dropping 3.6% compared with the same period last year.

The congestion reduction in Shijiazhuang is largely attributed to the opening of a new subway line in the city.
