A vast city area named Wuxiang New District has been taking shape in Nanning, the capital of South China's Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, with high-rise office buildings, beautiful structures for sports and culture events, parks, traffic network and increasing investment.

The construction plan was initiated in 2006 by Guangxi government to promote the development of Nanning city and the whole autonomous region. It aims to "create a new Nanning" since the planned construction area of 200 square kilometers is even larger than the city's urban area at that time.

Covering an area of around 200 square kilometers on the south side of the Yong river, a tributary of the Pearl River through which traverses the Nanning city, the new district consists of six major sections with different functions.

The three sections in parallel next to the river have been used for business and administration, culture and sport and ecological technology respectively. The section in the left middle is planned to develop trade and logistics and the right part has been reserved for the future construction. The section far from the river has been built into a place for environmental protection and tourism.

In past five years, the development of Wuxiang New District has embarked on the fast track. It has received a total investment of 136.9 billion yuan ($19.7 billion) and used foreign investment of around $780 million. At the time of this writing, 28 Fortune 500 companies including Bank of China, rolling stock manufacturer CRRC and real estate developer Vanke have established business here.

"Many bridges have been built over the Yong river. The subway line 2 has been put into use at the end of last year. Line 3, Line 4 and the extension of line 2 is under construction and will open one by one in the next three years," said Lyu Xi, an official from the management committee of the new district. All the subway lines mentioned has already do or will run through the area.

A number of culture and sport venues have emerged here, many of them becoming new city landmarks. The main stadium of Guangxi Sports Center shaped like two leaves floating in the air was completed in 2010. The Guangxi Culture and Art Center shaped like three Karst hills peaking through the clouds has been put into operation at the beginning of this year. The new Nanning library shaped like terrace will open to public by the end of this year.

Green leaves, Karst landscape and terrace are common views in warm, hilly and rainy Guangxi.

In addition, schools, hospitals and parks have also been established in the district to provide the public services.

The district looks beyond the capital and the province to the ASEAN countries, making Nanning more international and better play its role in the Belt and Road Initiative. The China-ASEAN Information Harbor has been set up to promote the penetration of the Internet, collect and share information on economy and finance, agriculture, logistics, education and health care between two sides.

Nanning is China's nearest capital city to the ASEAN countries and Guangxi borders Vietnam, one of them, to the Southwest.

According to the plan, the Wuxiang New District will be progressed into a business center, regional trade base, logistic center, manufacturing base, cultural hub and information exchange center for the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area in the future.
