Smart sanitation to promote waste sorting

Experts and entrepreneurs in the field of sanitation and smart technology from all over the country gathered at the 2019 China Smart Environmental Sanitation Forum, which was held in Liuzhou, Guangxi on Nov 26, to promote the integration of technology in waste sorting and utilization.

Starting from 2019, cities at the prefecture level and above nationwide will start domestic waste classification. By the end of 2020, 46 key cities are expected to have a garbage classification and treatment system. By the end of 2025, cities at the prefecture level and above are expected to have a garbage classification and treatment system.

With the widespread application of big data, cloud computing, and the internet of things (IoT), smart garbage classification has become a future development trend. China has accelerated the implementation of a garbage classification system in recent years, carrying out the research and application of smart sanitation, solving problems in waste classification and utilization, as well as improving the comprehensive utilization of waste.

Xu Wenlong, director of the China Association of Urban Environmental Sanitation, said at the forum that the key to the implementation of garbage classification is to form a classified utilization and processing system, as well as to strengthen the organic connection of the various stages of waste classification and delivery, classification collection, classification transportation, and classification treatment.

However, Fang Hua, vice president of Zhonghuan Smart Environment Co, pointed out constraints of the development of smart sanitation, as the informational efficiency of sanitation enterprises is only at about 40 percent and that aged environmental sanitation workers have difficulty using the smart equipment.

The forum was expected to address practical problems in the industry and overcome key and difficult technologies, such as accurate sensors, valuable data models, as well as the application of the Internet and IoT technology in the environmental protection industry.
