Passengers traveling along China's Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge can now access 5G network services, as the 5G communication network on the bridge has been completed, according to the Department of Transportation of Guangdong Province.
Twenty-four 5G base stations have been installed on the 55-kilometer mega bridge, with the mainland section fully covered by 5G signal. The average speed is now 600 megabits per second (Mbps) and is expected to reach 1,000 Mbps after further optimization.
The 5G network coverage lays the foundation for applications on the bridge, including immersive sightseeing, high-definition facial recognition and autonomous driving.
A national key research and development plan for the intelligent operation and maintenance of the bridge was launched in December 2019, and 5G technology was seen as an important support to solve problems related to security detection and emergency management along the corridor.
The 5G network will be integrated with other new technologies, such as China's BeiDou Navigation Satellite System and big data, to start a new phase of the intelligent operation and maintenance of the bridge.
The application of 5G technology will not only bring passengers a richer and more convenient experience but also help make the bridge a world-class digital bridge.
