The world's first hydrogen-powered smart train independently developed by CRRC Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Research Institute Co., Ltd., departed South China’s Hunan province on Friday. It will be shipped from Shanghai Port to Malaysia, marking the first batch of smart trains delivered to Southeast Asia.
The smart train will be used for urban transportation services in Kuching City in Sarawak, Malaysia. The vehicle adopts a hydrogen-powered propulsion system, offering advantages such as longer range, shorter refueling time, and lower carbon emissions.
Additionally, the vehicle adopts a 70 MPa hydrogen storage system and a high-power fuel cell system, enabling it to achieve a range of up to 245 kilometers. It is also equipped with a distributed power system, which offers a more compact structure, lighter weight, and enhanced power, providing the residents with a more comfortable and efficient commuting experience.
Taking into account that Malaysia has a tropical rainforest climate characterized by high temperatures and abundant rainfall throughout the year, the smart train R&D team has optimized the vehicle's performance to suit the local climatic conditions.
The smart trains will undergo a 3-month trial operation in Kuching City after it arrives in Malaysia.
CRRC Zhixing, a subsidiary of CRRC Zhuzhou Institute won the bid for the Kuching Intelligent Rail Project in Malaysia in July, 2022. The project consists of three lines totaling 69.9 kilometers and will be equipped with 38 smart trains.
