Compared with high-speed trains in many parts of China, there are slow green trains running through Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture, southwest China’s Sichuan Province.
Train No. 5633/4 is just one of such trains.
Slow trains carry 90 percent people of the Yi ethnic group. It is mainly for local residents living in the remote villages including students heading for schools, villagers stocking and selling produce, people visiting relatives and friends, and patients seeking for medical service......
Seemingly outdated and old, the slow-speed trains travel 353 kilometers, stopping for a while after running about 10 minutes, for the convenience of various passengers. Therefore, this kind of train is hailed by local residents as their buses or children’s “school bus”.
The trains have operated for almost half a century but the ticket prices have still remained the same, the lowest 2 yuan ($0.31) and the highest 25.5 yuan ($4).
