January 7, 1958 witnessed a freezing day in the depth of winter. A special winter swimmer jumped into the water of Nanning section of the Yongjiang River in Guangxi. That was the 65-year-old Chairman Mao, who then presided over a Central Working Conference in Nanning.

After 30 mins in the water, the accompanying doctor suggested he take a break ashore. But he decided to swim for another 10 mins, as if he didn't enjoy to the full. Some people asked him: Don't you feel cold? He replied: You won't feel cold once you're determined. If not, you’ll get chills even in 20°C days.
